For W.H. Auden
The ice,
thick
with innocence,
began to fissure
& melt
in late
July.
Mufflers,
& gloves,
& little hats
floated
to the surface.
The old folks
clucked
their tongues;
strange
to notice
a betrayal
not
of their own
doing.
